Event Recap
The adventurers arrived at the Trimar Lake Outpost to assist in the recovery efforts funded by Xan Turrainly, the Grand Actuary of the Laborer’s Guild in Shieldhaven. There they found the old Outpost had fallen into disrepair and was occupied by some savage trolls and their ravenous wolves. After clearing the Outpost of its new inhabitants, the adventurers began their work on rebuilding the settlement. Xan Turrainly, in an effort to gain the favor of the adventurers, offered to fund the material cost to improve two of the existing structures, however, the adventurers would need to provide any additional, rarer costs.

The adventurers set out to gather the materials required to improve the settlement. Some adventures, while mining near an abandoned mineshaft, were attacked by a large spider and her brood. The spider’s were eventually defeated, however it is rumored that some of her eggs remain in the mineshaft to this day. A short distance from the Outpost a lone lumberjack mouse stumbled upon a Treant, enraged by the destruction of its forest. The Treant gave chase when the beastfolk retreated back to the Outpost. There the Treant met its demise at the hands of a band of adventurers returning to the Outpost.

While some adventurers took to the shadows and “liberated” a nearby warehouse of its materials (to further improve the Outpost), others followed the path of Brother Lowe to reclaim a ruined church of the Sower. Back at the Outpost the unthinkable happened, an assassination attempt on the Grand Actuary Xan Turrainly. Luckily he survived and the proper authorities were notified, however, Xan was “unable” to identify the assailants. At the end of the day the adventurers were able to recover enough materials to rebuild the Outpost and improve upon its original walls, shrine and forge.
In 27 AS with rumours of Anarian Empire possibly looking to reclaim some of it's lost territory, and other threats appearing to the south, a proposal was set forth to band together for protection. They decided to appoint a group of governors to oversee themselves. Shieldhaven was invited to the gathering, but refused to join The Merchayne.
I have no doubt that the remaining council members and whoever will be elected in my stead will keep this city as prosperous and peaceful as we have seen it these last 11 years.” Two candidates have been pushing for the position, as rumours spread of his resignation this past year.
Player recap of the March 2024 event written by Mat K.

The Last Missive From a Mushroom Seller to his Sister
Contained below are the last words written by a Mushroom Salesman found in the Aurora Sunset, the recently discovered airship, which went down near doomed Shakar during the volcanic cataclysm around 100 years ago.

My dear sister Kesi, by now you should have read of the horrors from my letter a week ago, sad to say things did not improve since then, in fact you might say the issues have only exacerbated. Worse yet, I may be returning to the mushroom mine soon.

Earlier this morning I awoke with a start after hearing an explosion echoing out from the academic district. As they are a major buyer of our mushrooms for their potions, elixirs, and fancy gourmet luminary feasts, I was of course a bit anxious this would be a major dent in our profits for the foreseeable future. Against better judgment I rushed to the site of the explosion to obtain a firsthand account of what was going on. It appears a number of bandits or mercenaries had tried breaking into the library.

I told you about the adventurers that made a mess of things last week, so you shouldn’t be too surprised to learn they have not yet moved on and were once again making a mess of things today. Instead of allowing the proper authorities to deal with the intruders they decided to try and deal with the commotion themselves. After a lot of noise, damage, and blood they eventually dealt with some of the bandits, but lo and behold some of them got away. I spoke with a librarian after the adventurers left to ensure they were still good for their next purchase of mushrooms and to find out more information about where the adventurers were off to in such a rush.

The scholar informed me that he sent the adventuring party off to recover the seals that they, of course, left up at the previous ritual location outside of the city. Obviously, it would be dangerous if they were left there as someone else could use them to possibly reopen the rift that was closed. How the adventurers didn’t have the foresight to realize this themselves I will never know, but at least they were going to take care of that issue if only a week later than it should have been. With this information, and the relief knowing our operation was not in jeopardy, I headed back to the merchant district and set up the stall for the day.

This is when things went from bad to worse for me and sadly for our business. On their way back to town one of the adventurers sought me out. Being an expert on funguses he asked for my assistance. Interested in finding out what happened in recovering the seals, I agreed to help him, if he was willing to exchange information with me. He found this acceptable and answered my questions without repression. He informed me that they tracked the bandits and found that they were working for a cult, who to nobody's surprise, decided to steal the seals to try and reopen a rift. The cultists seem to have finished relations with the mercenaries and slew them upon their return. In the middle of him talking to me a wagon filled with large seals labored past so I assume they were able to dispatch the cultists without too much trouble. On the plus side I guess no more rifts will be opening in the near future.

Unfortunately, a second large wagon stopped in front of my stall with a sheet thrown over its contents. The blood covered adventurer explained that the contents in the wagon is the reason he wished to speak with me about fungi. He flipped off the wagon cover and what I saw inside shook me to the core. Around ten of the most pristine legendary Oceanmist Truffles that may have ever been harvested were within. Now you might not know much of these truffles, but they are rarely if ever seen and never in quantities of this sort! How these rare aquatic mushrooms were able to thrive within the desert is even more perplexing! Worse yet, they were also MASSIVE! The smallest of the truffles was over ten pounds in weight and three feet in diameter. I knew immediately the mushroom market within the city was doomed all thanks to these ‘adventurers’. I guess I spaced out for a moment as I stared at the mushroom troop, for when I came to the adventurer was tagging at my shirt sleeve and calling for me. He was asking me how much he could sell them for. Without foresight I doubled over laughing and explained he could empty out a large portion of the city's coffers with the damn mushrooms… and he just shrugged his shoulders as if that was no big deal! And with that he stated he will go and empty the city's coffers and he was quickly on his way.

So yeah… the mushroom economy is shot. Aside from having a taste that would make the gods weep they also have a shelf life measured in years not days so there will be enough mushrooms to go around here for some time to come. Even our greatest offerings will pale in comparison to these mushrooms. I already anticipate all orders being canceled soon.

This all happened over the course of the last few hours ago and it seems the adventurers are already up to their shenanigans again. We can hear explosions, the clash of steel, and screaming coming from outside the city and reverberating off the walls of its clay buildings. No matter what the disturbance is though, it cannot be worse than what those ‘Good for Nothings’ have done to our business. Sky Captain Senna seems eager to make off with the fighting so near by and I am not one to keep him when those truffles are days from proliferating throughout the city. Keep a shovel ready for me as I expect I will be moving back to you in just a few weeks. You will find my order information attached.

With love,

Your Brother, Merrick

Official Recap
We previously found our adventurers in the desert city of Shakar, a hot spot of trade and technological advances thanks to its proximity to an abundance of rare elementally charged
Aether Crystals. The adventurers found themselves setting up close to the walls of Sharkar in a “tent city” filled with like-minded travelers, merchants, and mercenaries. Here they were approached by a local rift scholar who explained that typically the rifts only appear for a brief moment and while they fundamentally change the landscape where they appear such as removing features, typically creatures and structures, and taking them to unknown planes or by placing said features from an unknown plane onto our world. The scholar goes on to explain that rifts don’t stay long enough to create a continuous impact to the area and typically only work in one direction.

However, a few miles outside of the walls of Shakar, a rift had opened and continues to stay open, releasing a plague of warped goblinoids to roam the desert. As long as this rift stays open it is creating an imbalance to the Aether in the area and could potentially cause a catastrophic collapse with unknown consequences. With the threat of the unknown dangers the rift scholar theorized that by collecting enough Aetheric energy from a collection of large crystals, including elementally attuned crystals, the adventurers could force the rift closed. With a plan to split into 5 groups to obtain the necessary crystals the adventurers were off.

* Earth Attuned - found in a mine filled with rampaging earth elementals
* Fire Attuned - found in a temple dedicated to fire (one of the few sites where fire attuned crystals appear)
* Water Attuned - Under the oasis, only accessible via a maintenance tunnel that is slowly flooding
* Air Attuned - In the eye of a sandstorm in the middle of the desert
* Two Unattuned - The last and largest group headed to the Aether Strip mine to obtain however the group was split into two when the Aetheric imbalance brought the dead to
life from the catacombs below. The first group was able to go to the mine to obtain a
large sample of unattuned Crystal and the second group fought their way out of the
catacombs and similarly obtained an unattuned crystal that was empowering a giant
skeleton.

With the crystals recovered the adventurers set up the ritual site on a cliff overlooking the semi-stable rift with the scholar’s aid. Almost as if to defend itself, waves of the twisted goblins sprung forth from the rift to battle our adventures. After a valiant battle to defend the cliff, the adventurers were able to succeed in completing the ritual and with an overwhelmingly strong wave of aetheric energy forced the rift shut. Cheers of jubilation echoed in the desert valley at the hard fought victory, however the Scholar did not have time to celebrate…sure his plan worked this time but was it a fluke? Most knew that Shakar is primarily a crystal mining
hotspot, but to find Attuned crystals of that size again would be difficult, they can take years to naturally grow. All the crystals used were destroyed in the ritual, so if another rift were to open and stabilize where would they find suitable crystals in such short notice again?
A City-state that governed itself via a council of 5, at the rivers intersection it was a lively stop for trade before going out to sea, but it's real claim as a power came when it was revealed that somehow they had found a way to prevent rifts from opening in the vicinity of their city. Having recently felt the loss of their leaders and finding no intention to share their discovery, the Anarian Empire attempted to march on the city with what forces it had on the western continent to take the secret. Their attempt ended in failure, as the besieged city was relieved by forces from the Kingdom of Turiand, eager to show the Anarian’s that they were willing to fight back against attempts to return themselves and others back to their control.
The shieldhaven council was invited to attend and join the Merchayne, but a lack of trust existed as the council members rejected the notion that a term of their inclusion would be the sharing of the reason why rifts so rarely appeared within their borders. Feeling that their inclusion was only to extort this information, the proposal was rejected by the Shieldhaven council.
It is currently ruled over by His Majesty King Feldin. For more than two decades King Feldin has been dealing with the breakaway of the Duchy of Lihnar. King Feldin called upon the other three Dukes to rally arms and assist with putting down the rebellion, but their own schemes saw few men sent to the King’s call and they were unable at the time to restore them to their place under the monarchy. Duke Harrod was executed for treason in the events following and the Duchy of Maldune was left to be ruled over by the Duchess Mariette. Duchess Oscana was left in control of the Duchy of Wellen, but her two sons were sent to become wards of the King against any future machinations. Duke Uriah alone answered the call to arms in force staying within favor of King Feldin.
-The Dance of the Deities - Chapter 1, Verse 5.

General
:Mystical phenomena such as Rifts and magic were originally attributed to gods and with the study of aether technology, the researchers have been able to prove how magic works and reacts on a technical level. It was proven that powerful entities are the cause of these reactions. In Arkrath, there can be a bit of a debate among the research communities of how many gods there actually are and which ones contribute to the world at large. There may be countless smaller deities or they are just different names for the major ones recognized.

Currently, there are 4 major dieties: The Sower of Seeds, The Devourer, The Trickster, and the Traveler

Sower of Seeds
* The Sower of Seeds. AKA Creator, Sower of Seeds is Life. It creates new magic/Aether and is the thought of expansion, could also be the idea of necromancy where life entered a deceased vessel.
** Symbols- Sun, Dawn, Tree of Life, 12 points?
** Colors- Green and Yellow
** Dogma- Spreading of Life, Proliferation of Aether, Growth
** Domains- The Sun, Light, Life, Aether, Creation
** Typical worshipers- Is the primary “Good” deity, widely worshiped in civilized realms
The Devourer
* The Devourer. AKA The Maw, The Void, The Eater, eats up excess magic/aether
** Symbols- Six Pointed Maw “Lamprey”, Empty Circle
** Colors- Black and White
** Dogma- Ending of Life, Destruction of Aether
** Domains- Darkness, Death, Destruction, Corruption
** Typical Worshipers-	Is the primary “Evil” deity, worship is typically banned in civilized realms
The Trickster
* The Trickster. AKA The Fool, is the random entropy of the world, they are luck and chance as one. They see these concentrations of magic and pull on them to create rifts.
** Symbols- Broken/Tipped Scales, Masks
** Colors- No set colors. Bright and garish within shrines
** Dogma- Upsetting of Balance, Being Contrary, Opening Rifts
** Domains- Trickery, Stealth, Chaos, Change, Rifts
** Typical Worshipers- More free-spirited than malevolent, but is often at odds with organized society, so is often considered “evil” by more civic minded peoples
The Traveler
* The Traveler. AKA The Protector or Guide, is the act of order, altruism, and protection. They guide and protect the Material Plane. They connect the rifts to help stave off the devourer. They are the reason why no one can get lost in time and space. Enables and monitors rift travel. Arkrath is a plane of special import to the Traveler, as its unique special nature allows rift travel more freely than any of the other planes.
** Symbols- Winding Road, Flying Birds
** Colors- Blues and Browns
** Dogma- Keeping Order Between Realms, Keeping Realms Contained
** Domains- Order, Travel, Rifts, The Planes
** Typical Worshipers- Not diametrically opposed to the trickster, but often at odds when trying to keep order between realms.
Rift Description
When a rift is opened by the trickster the excess magic pours from the Material Plane into the Aether Plane. This attracts the Devourer who will instinctively go to eat the excess and will try to eat everything the rift is attached to because it only consumes, it doesn’t know when to stop. The Traveler then connects the rifts an creates more of a small trickle of Aether, the devourer then eats a tiny amount until the excess is gone, and thus the rift closes.
The Dance of the Deities
The idea is that magic/the universe is cyclical and balanced. Maker expands the Aether, The trickster pulls the concentrations to make rifts, Traveler connects rifts to make the path safe, Devourer eats the excess energy that leaks through to slowly close the rift, less aether so the maker makes more – etc etc.

Just two years after the destruction, the Kingdom of Turiand saw itself break away, and the decades that followed had several City-states and small lords on the south-western outskirts claiming independence. Most of the Anarian empire’s power remains to the east, it even now struggles to hold what remains of its empire on the western continent with the loss of a large amount of it’s western forces attempting to retake breakaway states. With the sea of glass nearly impassable the only real means to transport people or messages from one side of the empire to the other is by boat across the Raymere Sea. Rumours abound that even now the western kingdom of the empire is already no longer under the control of the emperor.
Official Recap
Previously we found our adventurers adjusting to life in the desert city of Shakar a week after assisting the Rift Scholar in a ritual to close a stabilized rift, a phenomenon never heard of
before. What seemed to be a nice quiet morning was quickly tossed into chaos as a group of bandits began to attack the city. Explosions tore at the buildings in the city as the bandits moved through the crowds, cutting down anyone on their path...their target destination, the University of Shakar and the Rift Scholar.

Joining the city guard, the adventurer’s quickly overcome the bandits and rescue the students and faculty of the University. The adventurers learn that the bandits are from the Northern Town of Darust and that they are working in conjunction with a group of religious extremists who worship The Devourer. It would seem that they were trying to obtain the rift scholar’s research into the rifts, a fact that has the rift scholar sending the adventurers to check on his field research site as well as the site where the rift closing ritual was held. According to the rift scholar the Aetheric energy readings have been high and he fears another stable rift may be able to form.

The adventurers recovered the elemental sigil boards used in the Rift closing ritual, tracked down the remaining bandits who had stolen the Aetheric transmutation device from the
research site and gathered a sample of large un-attuned Aether crystals to use in the ritual should another rift open. Using the Aetheric Transmutation device the adventurers magically
attuned the aether crystals to each of the natural elements (fire, water, earth, wind), as well as, two prototype synthetic elements (plant and lightning).

Suddenly a rift opens in the center of the city, lava pouring out into the city proper as fire and earth elementals begin to assault Shakar. A robed figure lets out a twisted laugh and casually mentions that this is the beginning of the end of Shakar. Before the adventurers can approach him the mysterious figure slashes into air creating a temporal tear in reality that he steps through and then is gone. With the figure gone the adventurers turn their focus to the elementals and starting the ritual to close the rift.

As the fighting commences a large lava elemental steps through the rift, the adventurers try their best to overcome this new threat however it seems to be empowered by the rift and its home plane. Hoping to weaken the lava elemental, the adventurers set up the ritual to close the rift. The ritual begins and the rift starts weakening but just as it is about to close the lava elemental explodes, disrupting the ritual sigils. The rift, now unstable from all of the aetheric energy, violently explodes with the entire force of the lava plane. In an instant the entire city of Shakar as well as a large portion of the surrounding desert is destroyed by the cataclysmic explosion…the energy and heat from the explosion turning the desert area into what is now known as the Sea of Glass.

The Kingdom of Turiand, following their declaration of freedom from the Anarian Empire, rallied the northern parts of the continent to prevent the Empire from regaining more of a foothold on the western continent. Since then there have been skirmishes along the border with Lihnar as it seeks to gain recognition from the other empires and kingdoms to try and keep its freedom.

The Anarian Empire
The fall of their capital of Shakar, and the death of many of the empire’s central figures, led to the collapse of much of the Empire’s power.
